Legislative Update - take action!

H.849 - A civil action for damages for interference with State or federal constitutional rights by any government official.
This bill allows individual Vermonters whose constitutional rights have been violated by law enforcement at any level (state, local, federal) to sue for damages in state court.
If found guilty, the violator could be subject to monetary damages.
It's a novel idea, but a similar bill was passed in Illinois and is under consideration in California, New York and elsewhere.
The Vermont bill was passed by the House, but needs to get through the Senate Judiciary Committee next. Reach out to them now!

Perhaps something like this:

Dear Senator [***Last Name***],
I'm writing to urge your support for H.849, allowing Vermonters whose constitutional rights nave been violated by a government official to sue that official in state court.
This bill provides an important and valuable resource to counter the recent abuses by ICE and others and demonstrates your commitment to the rights of Vermonters.
Thank you for all your good work.

Urge the Vermont House Judiciary Committee to provide legal support to ICE detainees

More than 900 people have been detained by ICE in Vermont prisons since January 2025. Detainees who have counsel are four times more likely to win release than those without counsel. Good news: House bill H.742 provides legal assistance to persons detained in Vermont in connection with federal immigration proceedings. Bad news: The House Judiciary Committee hasn't taken action. They need to vote it out of committee soon for it to pass this year. Here's a sample to inspire you:

Re: H.742

Dear [Rep. _______________],

I'm writing to ask that the House Judiciary Committee take action as soon as possible on the bill to provide Legal Aid to ICE detainees. The continued abuse of our neighbors must stop and providing legal representation is key. Please move the bill out of committee with a favorable recommendation. Thanks for all your hard work.

Ask the VT Senate to rein in abusive federal agents

We've been active supporters of S.208 (Law Enforcement Identification -no masks) and S.209 (No civil arrests in sensitive locations). Thanks in no small part to your messages to the Senate Judiciary Committee, these bills are on their way to a vote by the full Senate. So, find your senators' contact info and call or write to make sure they know where you stand on ICE in our towns.
Perhaps something like this:

Re: S.208 & S.209
Dear [Sen. __________]

I'm writing today to express my support for S.208 (Law Enforcement Identification) and S.209 (No civil arrests in sensitive areas).
These are the least we should do as a state to protect ourselves from the abusive practices of federal forces under the command of autocrats and fascists.
I look forward to your vote on these measures.
Thanks for all your hard work.

Weekly ICE Vigils

Every Wednesday | 4:00-5:00 PM (new time, starting 3/25)
ICE Federal Data Center | 188 Harvest Lane, Williston
Park at East Rise Credit Union

Bring a bench, chair or cushion, warm clothes, blanket, hand and feet warmers, umbrella. Our meditative sit is an opportunity to work with the challenging energy of this time energy which manifests in many ways, including the suffering caused by ICE in our community, in our world, and in our hearts. Our aspiration is not to judge the people who work in the building, but to change the energy that leads to present attitudes and policies.

If you choose to bring a sign, we hope that your message will respectfully raise questions about ICE's policies and actions, and convey our appreciation for migrants, and their right to fair and legal treatment. More info: Anne Damrosch.

Stop the National Surveillance Center

ICE is currently using White Cap Business Park in Williston to host their National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center, which is used to spy on communities across the country and target immigrants for deportation. They are planning to bring in more spies this spring. Help get ICE surveillance out of Williston before they can scale up... Details here.

Vermont is maple syrup and ... insurance?

Yes, Vermont is the #1 state for a special product delightfully called "captive insurance". For instance, Florina Insurance is a Vermont company that only insures facilities owned by GEO group, which runs over 100 ICE detention centers...

Legal Defense Fund for Immigrants

Vermonters are stepping up financially to support our neighbors terrorized by ICE's thugs.
