Governor Scott has better civil rights protections on his desk
S209 - An act prohibiting civil arrest in sensitive locations - is on the governor's desk. It would prevent ICE from arresting non-criminals on immigration charges in courts, schools, government buildings, public libraries, polling places, social service centers, shelters, places of worship, children's camps, or health care facilities. This means federal agents can't arrest immigrants going to the doctor or taking their kids to school in Vermont. It's a big improvement for anybody in the Trump administration's cross-hairs! Tell the governor to sign it now. It's easy to leave a message with his office at 802-828-3333 or an email here. Maybe something like:
My name is ________, from __________, VT. Please sign S209 to prohibit civil arrests in sensitive locations. I strongly support the right of Vermonters to be safe from abusive quasi-legal actions when going about their business. Thank you.
This is a good thing to do right now!

Membership meeting report
Our membership meeting on June 1 was focused on the March 11 protest. We had two presenters: a protester who was choked unconscious by a state trooper and Senator Tanya Vyhovsky who was also at the protest. It was a dynamic meeting that raised serious questions about state police adherence to fair and impartial policing, just and appropriate use of force, use of masking with no ID’s, the opaque internal review process, and the absence of admitting their problems or intention to learn and improve. On everyone’s mind: why was there no public inquiry into the behavior and policies of the police - especially the state police. Could there still be? And why was there no disciplinary action taken towards the state police officer who choked the protester?
Next meeting: Tuesday July 7 at 530 PM.
