Local action: Urge Governor Scott to save Basic Food Assistance for Afghan allies
In July, Congress enacted H.R.1, the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA), which - for the first time in history - excluded refugees and other humanitarian entrants from eligibility to receive food and nutrition assistance under SNAP. In Vermont, the state government is considering going beyond the statutory language in H.R.1 by also excluding Afghan allies. H.R.1 does not change eligibility requirements for Afghan Special Immigrant Visa holders (SIVs), who assisted the U.S. mission and arrived as lawful permanent residents. And yet, Vermont could wrongfully cut off their access to SNAP, inappropriately referring to H.R.1 for justification.

to tell Governor Scott and Lt. Governor Rodgers to ensure our Afghan neighbors who stood with America — translators, human rights defenders, women and girls — receive basic food support.

How the autocrats do it
Last month, President Trump saw a Fox News story about Portland, Oregon that included misleading video of protests from 2020. Since then, he has asserted that Portland in under attack by terrorists and has called out National Guard units from Texas and California to secure the ICE facility there. In fact, there have been about 20 peaceful demonstrators
“ICE fishing” with donuts on fishing poles. No significant threat to ICE personnel or anyone else. The Mayor and the Governor pushed back and a federal judge issued a restraining order on the use of federal troops, writing
“[T]his is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law.”
Will Trump obey a legally-valid order from a federal judge? Will the Generals accede to his unconstitutional demands? Will the troops fire on peaceful citizens? Will they incite violence to create an excuse for martial law? See
